What to do in Barcelona in April: events, exhibitions, activities

Barcelona has to offer a big range of alternatives planes in April 2019; we have all kind of festivals, from Comics to Flowers and Independent movies. Also on the art scene we have show openings, World Press Photo exhibition, installations and performances.

So put your comfortable shoes on and let´s have a walk into Must to See on April in Barcelona.

4-7 April: Pecatta Mundi, an installation by Antoni Miralda host on National Museum of Art of Cataluña with Free entry. The Lamb of the Apocalypse, the 18×15 meters tapestry-bedspread recreates the Agnus Dei of the Romanesques mural of Sant Climent de Taull, part of the Honeymoon Project (986-19992), for the wedding between the Statue of Libert and the Columbus Monument. The installation is completed with a selection of drawings and multiple works by Miralda. If you are in town this weekend I think it is a great opportunity to see.

5-7 April: we have the 37th edition a Comic Barcelona Fair. Prepare  yourself for a great walking moment as you have 52.000 meters to trail it. You have 3 full days to immerse yourself in the Comic universe. Fira Barcelona Montjuic host this event (like the other years) but this time the National Museum of Art of Cataluña (MNAC) will host 2 exhibitions – the new adventures of Corto Maltés, by Juan Díaz Canales and Rubén Pellejeroeo & Underground comic exhibitions that celebrate the 40th annivrsary of the “El Vibora” magazine.

8 April: we celebrate the International Gipsy Day (beside of my B-day J but as I´m not international my event will be just something quiet and private). Well, for the International Gipsy Day the city offers various official and festive events to make known to the whole world the reality and the rich and diverse culture of the gypsy people. In front of the Cathedral, on Plaza Nova (our 1st stop in our photo walking tour) between 18:00-20:00 will have Concert & Flamenco Shows where you can see different local artist. If you decide to make a tour on Magical Fountain the show between 21:00 and 22:00 will be decorated with gypsy music and them flag colors will be reflected in the lights.

All the month and until Jun 9th: On Abortion, photo exhibition by Laila Abril. We meet Laila Abril on the inauguration day (March 28th) at Foto Colectania. Her photo exhibition is impacting, “On abortion” is the 1st chapter from an ongoing project call the “ A History of Misogyny”, a visual investigation about the misogynistic made by comparing history facts with contemporaries one. She documents and conceptualizes the dangers and damages caused to women due to their lack of access to abortion in a legal, safe and freeway. Seeing the exhibition, I got the chicken skin, weird sensations surprised me several times. I remembered the stories that, probably, most of our mothers have lived it.

23 April:  Sant Jordi is just right after the Easter this year. This holiday is pretty unique and also is an important Catalan symbol, is like a local Valentine’s Day. In this day the boy receives flowers and the girl books. The streets are full with flower kiosks (most of them roses) and Las Ramblas is the place to be for buying a book. Maybe you can meet your favorite writer as are a lot of book signature.:) If you are in Barcelona this day it is a great photo opportunity for you as the street atmosphere is really special. My advice: go out and find the stories to shoot.

26 April – 5 May: Feria de Abril on Forum. If you want to have a taste of Spanish culture, Flamengo, music, colorful dresses and tasty food this is place for you to be. Ok, is not Seville but if you are in Barcelona is an opportunity that you don´t want to miss. You will find different tents, each one with his music, people dancing and how else: a lot of dots and colors.
